Spring Cleaning

Spring is a great time to clean and organize the house in preparation for the fun summer months, and so the term “Spring Cleaning” is synonymous with what many people do around March/April timeframe. But for me and my family, our calendar revolves around the school calendar since my wife is an elementary school teacher. Our “Spring Cleaning” occurs after the school ends in June. That’s when we attempt to clean and organize our house - in with the new and out with the old. This is the same time we organize and back up our PCs.

At the conclusion of every academic year, my wife backs up her notebook PC onto a Toshiba Canvio® Flex external HDD, a perfect match for her Mac® PC. She downloads a copy of all of the year’s lesson plans as well as pictures of her students’ work. She keeps the Canvio® Flex external HDD in her classroom, and although she has not have had to resort to accessing the backup copy, she is comforted knowing that she has a backup copy at her fingertips.

My job is to back up our home PC, which is the depository of everything from cooking recipes and financial statements to family pictures. I’m always amazed at the amount data we accumulate every year, especially pictures. And although not every picture warrants a backup, pictures from family gatherings and our vacations are invaluable. Given the growing size of our photo library, I recently upgraded to a 4TB Canvio® Advance external HDD for the large storage capacity and fast data transfer speed.

So as my wife and I approach the end of the year (New Year’s Day is the first day of school), we are ready to tackle the new (school) year and all of the new data we’ll amass. And next summer, we’ll again perform our yearly “Spring Cleaning”.

Toshiba defines a megabyte (MB) as 1,000,000 bytes, a gigabyte (GB) as 1,000,000,000 bytes and a terabyte (TB) as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1GB = 230 = 1,073,741,824 bytes and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software and operating system, such as Microsoft Operating System and/or pre-installed software applications, or media content. Actual formatted capacity may vary.

** Compatibility may vary depending on user‘s hardware configuration and operating system.  Reformatting required for use with Apple Time Machine.
