Three Months of Learning and Growth: My Summer Internship at TAEC

This summer, I had the opportunity to work as an engineering intern at Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC). Although the internship lasted only three months, it became one of the most rewarding and educational experiences I have had. I was able to strengthen my technical skills, learn about the hard disk drive industry, and better understand how engineering teams solve complex, real-world problems.

During my internship, I contributed to several projects related to hard disk drive firmware and performance. My work included modernizing an internal logging system used for performance analysis, updating firmware development tools to support a new hardware platform, and building an automated testing and data analysis workflow. Through these projects, I gained hands-on experience across multiple stages of the engineering process—from writing and testing code to collecting data, analyzing results, and communicating my findings.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned was that good engineering involves much more than simply making something work. It requires carefully evaluating performance, understanding tradeoffs, investigating unexpected results, and continuously looking for ways to improve a system. Working on real products also showed me the importance of reliability and attention to detail. Even a small improvement can require extensive testing and close collaboration among many people.

Just as important, this internship taught me how much a supportive environment can accelerate learning. My supervisor, Johanna Hernandez, was always kind, encouraging, and supportive. Her guidance gave me the confidence to take on unfamiliar challenges and continue moving forward when I encountered difficulties. I am also especially grateful to my mentor, Rick Ehrlich, who introduced me to the field and generously shared his knowledge and experience. His guidance helped me develop a much deeper understanding of both the technology and the engineering mindset behind it.

The entire team made me feel welcome from the beginning. Everyone was approachable and willing to answer questions, discuss ideas, and help me learn. Being surrounded by experienced engineers who were generous with their time made every day an opportunity to grow.

Looking back, I am amazed by how much I learned in such a short period. This internship expanded my technical knowledge, strengthened my problem-solving skills, and gave me greater confidence in approaching complex engineering challenges. It also reinforced my interest in embedded systems and firmware development.

I am sincerely grateful to Johanna, Rick, and the entire TAEC team for making this summer such a meaningful experience. I will carry the knowledge, lessons, and relationships I gained at TAEC with me as I continue my studies and pursue future opportunities in engineering.
