Opal Security Subsystem Class (Opal SSC)

 

Overview
The Opal Security Subsystem Class (Opal SSC) specification from the
Trusted Computing Group (TCG), defines a set of industry standard security
capabilities aimed at protecting data on notebooks and other client systems.
Self-Encrypting Drives (SEDs) designed to the Opal SSC specification
provide advanced access security and built-in hardware data encryption. As
an open industry standard, Opal is encouraging broad support among software
developers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), with the goal of
enabling businesses to seamlessly manage mixed deployments using both preexisting
software encryption and SEDs designed to Opal SSC. Furthermore,
the Opal specification help organizations easily and cost-effectively protect
data from loss or theft, and also supports the secure repurposing, or end-oflife,
of client systems using SEDs.

 

Recognizing the need for stronger and more transparent deployment of
encryption, leading ISVs have participated directly in the development of the
TCG’s Opal SSC specification. As a result, Opal SSC is a broadly-supported
industry standard, with many security management software vendors
supporting mixed environments of Opal SSC-compliant SEDs and legacy
software encryption applications. Because SED security features are
transparent to applications and operating systems, the drives can be deployed
into any managed security environment supporting the industry standard Opal
SSC specification.
